Major social and political protests of the last years showed that in times of crisis people seeking recovery of social relations in the city and across the city, and "body" of the social action consists of various communities that have never interacted in the city before. But what do the different communities when the moment of crisis is passing, or on the contrary, becoming a lengthy and tedious process? Especially when the problems of public spaces remain unresolved  in Kyiv, when we face privatization and commercialization, exclusion of various social groups from using the public spaces.

After the 3 years of work with public space we continue to believe that art is a social practice that can create a mosaic of the city – unite people with a variety of worlds beyond their own and be a social tool for providing a voice to those who largely are not heard. Art and cultural practices allow interaction with the city, show its new features, the importance of certain places of cultural memory, make visible locations and communities previously ousted from consideration. The experience of recent projects implemented by CSM showed not only interest and participation of the society, but also a certain lack of tools and techniques, which can be used by the Ukrainian artists and activists in the public space. Therefore, we start “Mosaic of the City” project and invite artists, curators, and cultural managers who are interested in participatory and community art and interaction with the city to submit a proposal until 7 June 2015.

We offer:

After completion of the workshops participants have to present ideas of participatory art projects for specific urban spaces and communities.

-       implementation of the participant’s own project. Five ideas will be selected to be implemented during August – October 2015 in Kyiv.
